The marshmallows are loved by everyone in the family. They are great for hot cocoa, camping trips, desserts, Thanksgiving classics… But, even though the marshmallows are without fat, they are packed with sugar.
One standard marshmallow contains four grams of sugar. But, you can’t eat just one marshmallow. One cup of marshmallows for your hot chocolate or for a dessert contains a surprising 29 grams of sugar, and that is more than 400 empty calories.
Health risks of extra sugar
If you consume a lot of sugar, it increases the overall calorie content and that can lead to obesity and unhealthy weight gain. The foods that are high in sugar (read marshmallows), are generally low in nutrition.
The sugar has been connected to some long-term health issues. If you eat too much sugar, that will be connected to the following:
- Cancer (especially pancreatic cancer)
- Heart disease
- Tooth problems (cavities)
- Diabetes and insulin resistance
- Addictions to food
